About M.Sc Biochemistry

Biochemistry is the study of the chemical properties of biologically important molecules and processes in cells and tissues. It deals with the structure and function of cellular components, such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules. Biochemical understanding is fundamental to all biological disciplines. While much of modern biochemistry aims to provide an understanding of fundamental biological processes at a molecular level, it also contributes to the solving of medical problems and the discovery of safe and effective drugs. This programme aims to provide a thorough knowledge of contemporary Biochemistry at the cellular and molecular level. This programme allows students to gain research experience and professional skills, sometimes in a different area to their first degree, before deciding on a future career in industry or academic research.

The biochemistry department has diverse research interests. Intense research is carried out in the field of microbial production, purification and characterization of several different enzymes that are of importance in pharmaceutical, detergent and other industries. Another focal areas of research include development of biosensors, animal model based toxicity studies, extraction and characterization of therapeutic compounds from plants and cancer metabolomics studies.

An important aspect of the Biochemistry programme at SoS is its fourth-semester in-house project, lasting 24 weeks full-time, which allows students to explore both laboratory-based research and specific recent advances in biochemistry in detail. Students choose the project for themselves. Under the supervision of a group leader, they will design their own experiments, and will learn to plan research programmes and present their results and ideas orally and in written form to other workers in the field through research publications in scientific journals and in national conferences. The experience gained is much valued by employers. The project also gives them the opportunity to reflect on their aptitude and enthusiasm for a research career.
